About Me
print ("Hello World!")
My name is Naba Rizvi. I am a junior majoring in Information Technology with a minor in Digital Art & Design. I enjoy experimenting with food and crying when the result is actually edible...but you didn't come here to read that.
My romance with computers began in a coffee shop 13 months ago. Back then, I was 550% sure I was destined to be a full-time human rights activist...and a lawyer on the side. 1.5 internships later...I realized majoring in Political Science will not really help me with my goals to save the world. So I did what every sane and rational person in my position would do...and received career advice from an unemployed stranger I met at Tim Horton's. "Try information systems!" he suggested, "Great job security and awesome pay. It's like computer science, without the boring stuff."
Two months later, after befriending a web developer, I realized I loved the boring stuff.
I have switched my major at least 5 times in college...but this time, I am actually content with my decision. I look forward to my computing classes, and to work, where I have the complete freedom to design and develop my own websites. I get to use both sides of my brain with absolutely no restrictions. I love it.
Plus, being a visible minority in a field where only 17% of the workers are female has given me a new mission. I have decided to hand over my duties to save the world to Wonder Woman. Instead, I am now focusing on a more exciting task- trying to increase the amount of women (and other minorities) in tech. Thus, I have decided to start this blog to prove to the skeptics among us that tech IS exciting and to shatter the stereotype that only awkward white boys belong in this industry.
(Shameless self-promotion: If you are interested in tech, but don't know where to start, consider joining ACM-W, a student organization at UT that is committed to helping people like you)
