Spooktec

Yesterday I had the opportunity to debut my first ever Java game at Halloweengineering (now called Spooktec).

Spooktec is an event where engineering organizations show off some cool projects and hand out candy to children. ACM, for example, developed a robot and built their own train to hand out candy to children. Our organization developed a modern rendition of Asteroids.

It started off with us originally planning to create an arcade game. Unfortunately, despite my teammate Ben's efforts, we were unable to get the hardware to cooperate. So we had to ditch the idea of an arcade and make a regular game.

Ben & Yizhen wrote the code on Java in LibGdx. I worked on the code for a counter, but ended up not including it in our code as it was not needed. My entire team was so helpful! I was super worried because the event timings conflicted with my class schedule and since we were only given one week to prepare and everyone had work and midterms to take care of...my anxiety was (naturally) through the roof!

Our amazing Vice Chair Carla went out on a school day to buy us candy. Yizhen and Ben stayed up all night fixing bugs. Kaodili and Nadine helped set up and Yizhen stayed with me during the entire event and helped set up. Throughout the night, no one could tell ACM-W was missing their Chair or that we pulled everything off last minute. The amazing cooperation between our team members was so inspiring. All thanks to them, I managed to help out two organizations (as a member of the Engineering Council, I was on the organizing team), AND juggle my job and classes. I had the wonderful opportunity of adding a lot of new flyer and banners I designed for the event to my portfolio, along with all the graphics for this game.

All thanks to my amazing team, our first Spooktec was absolutely perfect. <3
